Everyone aged 66 and over and living permanently in Ireland is entitled to Free Travel on all buses and trains operated by CIE companies. If you qualify for free travel you are issued with a pass that you must carry with you when travelling on public transport. In some cases, a free companion pass may be issued to allow a person to accompany the free travel pass holder (if the person is unable to travel alone). Free Travel Cards are non-transferable and can only be used by the named person. If you are in receipt of a social welfare pension, then the pass will be automatically issued to you once you turn 66. If this isn’t the case then you must apply for the pass yourself by completing form FT1 which can be found online.
Free travel for over 66s is a great initiative that everyone should take advantage of.
