Paying for care

Paying for home care, made clear

Working out how to pay for care can feel overwhelming. Here’s a plain-English guide to your options in Ireland — and we’re always happy to talk it through with you.

Your options

Three ways to fund care at home

Many families combine these — for example, HSE-funded hours during the week with private cover in the evenings, and tax relief on the private part.

Free if eligible

HSE Home Support

The HSE Home Support Service is free. It’s mainly for people aged 65 and over, and some younger people — for example, people with early-onset dementia. You don’t need a medical card, and your income is not checked.

  • Ask your public health nurse, GP or hospital team, or apply to your local HSE home support office
  • Local Homecare is an HSE-approved home support provider
  • If you need more hours than the HSE provides, you can add private hours with us

Tax relief on care

If you pay for care for someone who is totally incapacitated due to physical or mental infirmity, you may be able to claim Revenue’s “Employing a carer” relief — including for care arranged through a home care agency.

  • Relief at your highest rate of tax
  • On costs of up to €75,000 per person, per year
  • Not available on HSE-funded care, and claimable up to four years back through myAccount

How to get HSE‑funded care

  1. Ask for an assessment. Talk to your public health nurse, GP or hospital team, or contact your local HSE home support office.
  2. A care needs assessment. The HSE assesses what support is needed. You don’t need a medical card, and your income isn’t checked.
  3. Choose your provider. Local Homecare is an HSE-approved home support provider — let the HSE know you’d like us to deliver your care.
  4. Top up if you need to. If you’d like more hours than the HSE can provide, we can add private hours to the same care plan.

Waiting for HSE hours?

Approval and scheduling can take time. If you need support now, we can usually start private care quickly while you wait — and adjust when your HSE package begins.

Funding FAQs

Questions about costs

Can’t find your answer? Our team is happy to help, day or night.

Does HSE home support depend on my income?

No. According to the HSE, you don’t need a medical card for the Home Support Service and your income is not checked. Support is based on your assessed care needs and available resources.

Can I combine HSE hours with private care?

Yes. Many families combine HSE-funded hours with extra private hours — for example, an evening call or weekend cover. We can help you plan a mix that works.

Can I claim tax relief on HSE-funded hours?

No. The “Employing a carer” relief applies only to costs you pay yourself. Any HSE funding or other grants must be deducted before you claim.

Who can claim the tax relief?

The person receiving care can claim, or a relative who pays for the care. The person cared for must be totally incapacitated due to physical or mental infirmity. Revenue has full details, and an accountant or Citizens Information can advise on your situation.
